HIAB Has Remote-Controlled Hole Cutter For Firefighters

Monday, March 8th, 2010

We all know that firefighting is a dangerous job, but one of the most challenging tasks was just made easier by a HIAB knuckleboom crane.

When flames are racing through a building, firefighters need to cut a hole in the roof to release hot combustion gases. Releasing the gases can slow the spread of the fire, improve visibility in the building, and often enable firefighters to find and extinguish the source of the fire more quickly.

Working together, HIAB and Sundsvall-Timra Emergency Services in Sweden came up with a solution that increases safety and efficiency: a radio-controlled HIAB XS 477 knuckleboom crane with six hydraulic arms and a Jib 100. The crane is mounted on a demountable platform, making it possible to install it on the demountable vehicles that the Emergency Services team already had.

A tine grab on the crane crushes roofing materials. Radio controls make it possible for the operator to move the crane with precision from a safe distance—a far cry from manual cutting operations where firefighters often had to contend with slippery or snowy roofs.

The HIAB truck crane can reach 30m straight or 26m sideways. With the jib adding another 8m, firefighters can reach the top of 8-storey buildings and reach across flat roofs. Firefighters also plan to use the crane for other purposes, like lifting roof panels, trees or signs that have blown down during a storm.

HIAB is an industry leader in many ways, and this latest innovation proves why. Atlas Polar is proud to be part of the HIAB team. For more information on HIAB boom trucks, visit our HIAB truck crane page.

New HIAB MEWP Offers Two Solutions in One

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

With the new personnel basket from HIAB you can expand the type of jobs you do with your crane. Instead of just lifting materials, you can also lift people who need to perform manual work and repairs, all by simply adding a new personnel basket to your HiPro crane.

HIAB has named its personnel basket the Mobile Elevated Work Platform, or MEWP. As with all HIAB knuckleboom products, safety is the first priority with the MEWP, which is in full compliance with the most recent European safety standard, EN 280.

Safety is also in evidence in the design of the MEWP. Some of the built-in safety features include: automatic horizontal levelling of the basket, external safety rails to guard against crushing, a push-button emergency stop in the basket, and vertical and rotational speed control. There is also a manual pump and emergency lowering capability in case of a power failure. To further secure the safety of personnel, the operating system ensures that the crane’s stabilizers are in place and fully extended. If they are not, the crane will not operate.

Beyond safety, HIAB boom truck equipment is also known for its ease of use. To maximize the versatility of the MEWP, HIAB has made its installation as simple as possible. Just mount the basket and turn an easily accessible key to switch the crane to MEWP mode.

The personnel basket itself is designed for operator comfort. It can fit two personnel with tools and includes a non-slippery, self-draining floor. Hooks for harnesses, a tool box, and a special holder for the remote control are also easily accessible to operators from within the basket. The emergency stop button is also within easy reach.

Imagine how much more work you can accomplish with the MEWP. With one truck you can transport building materials, sand or gravel and then switch to the MEWP to make inspections or install or repair power lines or streetlights.

As an example of how the MEWP works, HIAB uses the combination of MEWP and XS 166 HiPro outfitted with an E-link boom system with five extensions. Not only can you lift about 1,000 kg at 13 m with this configuration, you can also switch to the MEWP and lift personnel as high as 20 m at a boom angle of 70º.

When you add a HIAB MEWP to your HiPro crane, you have a single, certified solution for crane and personnel basket.

The MEWP is currently certified for use with the following HIAB HiPro cranes: XS 122, 144, 166, 211, 244, 288, 322, 377, 422 and 477.

HIAB Weighing Hooks

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Anyone in the materials handling business knows that taking precise weight measurements is an essential part of the job.

HIAB has devised an innovative solution for weight measurement. Like all HIAB solutions, this one makes your job faster and easier so you can work with greater efficiency.

HIAB weighing hooks are one component in the company’s overall truck boom weighing system. Available in three different weighing capacities, the weighing hooks communicate wirelessly with a handheld device. From select handheld devices you can use Bluetooth to print an invoice, or connect to a printer or computer via USB.

All weighing systems comply with current accuracy norms as established through the International Organization of Legal Metrology, although the largest weighing hook – the LSH 125 – is not certified for invoicing purposes.

Atlas Polar sells complete HIAB weighing system packages, which include everything you need – scale, handheld device, software and accessories.

HIAB Boom Truck Weighing Systems

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

At one time crane operators only needed to know the weight of a load to ensure that their truck and crane could handle it. In today’s market, precise weight data is a must. Exact measurements are often required for invoices and insurance documents. Accurate numbers are also needed to resolve legal disputes. HIAB’s truck boom weighing systems combine precision with ease-of-use to give you a complete load weighing solution.

HIAB weighing systems use wireless technology to make measurements fast and easy. The weighing scale sends its information to a handheld device through a secure radio connection. Three handheld models are available – Standard, Pro and Automatic – so you are sure to find one that suits your exact needs. The Pro and Automatic devices can then communicate via a USB connection to a printer or computer. They can also send data to a portable printer via Bluetooth to create invoices instantly.

The systems are designed with durability in mind, making them ideal for outdoor use. They are also compliant with International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) norms. (HIAB systems with the LSH 125 weighing hook are not, however, approved for invoicing.)

What really sets HIAB’s system apart is its motion sensor. All scales include a motion sensor that allows you to obtain accurate weights even when the load is moving. Imagine how much time you’ll save with this innovation!

To help you select the best tool for the job, HIAB offers complete weighing system packages that include a scale, two batteries, a handheld wireless unit with a docking station/recharger, and weighing software. HIAB can also integrate their software with any that you currently use.

HIAB Takes Truck Cranes to New Extremes

Monday, February 8th, 2010

HIAB cranes have been used in some pretty extreme environments, including a new application in the harsh wilderness of northern Finland. In a collaborative project with Veho Commercial Vehicles and Eltel Networks, Cargotec equipped the first Mercedes-Benz Zetros with a HIAB XS-377 E6 Hi Pro truck-mounted crane for use in the construction of power lines.

The Mercedes-Benz Zetros is an off-road vehicle made for challenging environments. It was commissioned by Eltel Networks, one of the leading Infranet service providers in northern Europe. The type of solution was dictated by Eltel personnel who build power lines in very rugged terrain.

“The design work and strength calculations took their time, especially as the vehicle was equipped in order to meet the demanding requirements of a company building and maintaining electrical and telecommunications networks,” said Arto Moilnanen, Sales Manager for Cargotec’s HIAB products.

The three companies worked very closely together to create a powerful, accessible loader for the Zetros, a known performer in demanding off-road conditions.

The Zetros was designed for the most extreme conditions. Its 7.2L engine has an output of 326 horsepower, and the vehicle has wading depth of between 80 and 110 cm. The civilian Zetros is lighter than the military version and can be transported by rail or air, with the latter being preferred by Eltel Networks, which needs to respond quickly to breakdowns.

Although knuckleboom cranes in the 37 tonne metre class, like the HIAB 377, are typically too heavy for an off-road vehicle, the Zetros frame was stiffened to handle the weight of the crane which offers a horizontal reach of 24 metres and a vertical reach of just under 30 metres.

Along with the standard boom system, the crane used on the Eltel Zetros includes a jib for attaching a personnel basket. Because this is a HIAB crane, operator safety is built in. The hydraulic hoist is operated by remote control, which enhances safety, and hydraulic stabilizer legs give added stability to the boom truck.

HIAB also added a sturdy platform to the truck: “The platform is equipped with a rack for transporting poles and binding sections for cabling equipment. The aluminum profile base enables large point-concentrated loads, which are often needed when constructing power networks”", said Moilanen.

As far as the collaboration between Cargotec and Veho, the Zetros is only the beginning. Both companies have worked together to produce a concept for the Mercedes-Benz Atego chassis. The experience of Eltel will provide Cargotec and Veho with the knowledge they need to adapt their equipment to the specific needs of their customers.

Atlas Polar sells the versatile and powerful HIAB XS 377 truck crane, along with many other models including the HIAB XS 088 truck crane to suited to a wide range of load handling applications. For more information, visit our HIAB truck cranes page.

What Will They Think of Next?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Cargotec is well known for its innovation and its commitment to finding eco-friendly solutions for materials management. The parent company of Hiab, Moffett and Multilift has done it again with its new Kalmar Edrive® straddle carrier.

As the seventh generation in this line, the Edrive (ESC350W) meets the industry’s increasingly strict environmental and noise regulations. The Edrive features electrically controlled engines that reduce emissions and save operators money by lowering fuel consumption. The winch system has full AC drives that enable regenerative power distribution between the hoist and drive functions – another innovation that lessens the impact on the environment and makes the machines quieter. As with all Cargotec products, driver comfort and safety were also factored into the new design.

The Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) is set to receive four of the Edrive straddle carriers in the second quarter of this year. Their units will include variable speed generator systems to optimize engine use and further reduce emissions and fuel consumption. PNCT chose the Edrive, in part, because of Cargotec’s commitment to parts availability and service, as well as the company’s impressive environmental track record.

Atlas Polar is a longtime partner of Cargotec and we are proud to promote yet another forward-thinking design. To learn more about the Cargotec products we carry, visit our home page and follow the links.

Cargotec Leads the Way Again

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Cargotec, the parent company for HIAB knuckleboom cranes, Moffett truck mounted forklifts and Multilift hooklift systems, has won the best ship loading system award from the International Bulk Journal.

The Siwertell ship unloader bested the other four finalists, and was deemed the most efficient, safe and innovative.

As is the case with all Cargotec products, the Siwertell line combines safety, efficiency, and versatility, all while emphasizing environmental sustainability. The Siwertell line offers fully-enclosed bulk handling solutions and dust-free loading and unloading systems. Not only are these systems cleaner, they also offer some of the highest loading capacities in the industry.

Versatility is achieved through the four groups of loading systems. Each group is defined by the size of ship being loaded or unloaded, the rated unloading capacity, and the type of material being moved. The supporting steel structure is the key – it can be made to accommodate different conveyor sizes and can be fabricated in different lengths for various sized ships.

With over 300 Siwertell systems installed around the world, this award-winning technology is yet another Cargotec success story.

As a proud seller of Cargotec products, Atlas Polar would like to congratulate everyone at Cargotec for this outstanding achievement.
