HIAB Supports Firefighters in Zwickau

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

When most of us think about firefighting equipment, large ladder trucks are usually the first thing that comes to mind. But firefighting also requires support vehicles that can manage additional equipment.

When assisting at a fire, speed is essential. That is why the Fire Brigade in Zwickau, Germany chose three HIAB products for its support vehicles. With the help of a HIAB 244 EP-5 HiDuo truck crane, a Multilift JHS 250 hooklift, and a Moffett M4 piggyback truck mounted forklift, the Zwickau brigade can load, transport and unload vital equipment at the scene of a fire. What’s more, because the HIAB equipment is easy to use with fast loading and unloading speeds, only one operator is required to manage the job.

The Zwickau Fire Brigade uses the Multilift hooklift to carry foam and other items in a two-level container. At the scene, the operator can easily unload the necessary equipment using either the Moffett forklift or HIAB crane. Operators have noted how easy the Moffett truck-mounted forklift makes their job. It has proven ideal for loading, unloading and setting up a foam station for mixing and refilling.

Atlas Polar is pleased to carry a wide range of HIAB products. For more information on the HIAB equipment we sell, we invite you to visit our product pages: Multilift Hooklifts, HIAB truck mounted cranes, and Moffett truck mounted forklifts.

Ever Wondered What HIAB Stands For?

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The name HIAB is synonymous with quality and innovation in materials handling solutions. From truck mounted loader cranes to Multilift hooklifts and Moffett piggyback truck mounted forklifts, HIAB covers all the bases when it comes to load handling.

But what does HIAB, the name, actually stand for?

The company was founded in Sweden in 1944. Its full name is Hydraliska Industri AB, which was shortened to HIAB.

The founder was Eric Sundin who had developed a way to use hydraulics to power loader cranes. Around the same time, three Finnish brothers developed the first hooklift. They launched the Multilift company in 1949. The two companies would later find themselves merged together when the Partek Corporation purchased Multilift (in 1977) and then HIAB (in 1985).

More mergers have occurred since then, and HIAB and Multilift have continued to thrive under their various owners: first the KONE Corporation, which acquired Partek in 2002, and then Cargotec, which acquired the brands in 2005.

Since 1953, Atlas Polar has worked as distributor of HIAB products—truck mounted cranes first, followed by the other HIAB products. In fact, Atlas Polar is HIAB’s oldest independent dealer in the world. What Will They Think of Next?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Cargotec is well known for its innovation and its commitment to finding eco-friendly solutions for materials management. The parent company of Hiab, Moffett and Multilift has done it again with its new Kalmar Edrive® straddle carrier.

As the seventh generation in this line, the Edrive (ESC350W) meets the industry’s increasingly strict environmental and noise regulations. The Edrive features electrically controlled engines that reduce emissions and save operators money by lowering fuel consumption. The winch system has full AC drives that enable regenerative power distribution between the hoist and drive functions – another innovation that lessens the impact on the environment and makes the machines quieter. As with all Cargotec products, driver comfort and safety were also factored into the new design.

The Port Newark Container Terminal (PNCT) is set to receive four of the Edrive straddle carriers in the second quarter of this year. Their units will include variable speed generator systems to optimize engine use and further reduce emissions and fuel consumption. PNCT chose the Edrive, in part, because of Cargotec’s commitment to parts availability and service, as well as the company’s impressive environmental track record.

Atlas Polar is a longtime partner of Cargotec and we are proud to promote yet another forward-thinking design. To learn more about the Cargotec products we carry, visit our home page and follow the links.

Cargotec Leads the Way Again

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Cargotec, the parent company for HIAB knuckleboom cranes, Moffett truck mounted forklifts and Multilift hooklift systems, has won the best ship loading system award from the International Bulk Journal.

The Siwertell ship unloader bested the other four finalists, and was deemed the most efficient, safe and innovative.

As is the case with all Cargotec products, the Siwertell line combines safety, efficiency, and versatility, all while emphasizing environmental sustainability. The Siwertell line offers fully-enclosed bulk handling solutions and dust-free loading and unloading systems. Not only are these systems cleaner, they also offer some of the highest loading capacities in the industry.

Versatility is achieved through the four groups of loading systems. Each group is defined by the size of ship being loaded or unloaded, the rated unloading capacity, and the type of material being moved. The supporting steel structure is the key – it can be made to accommodate different conveyor sizes and can be fabricated in different lengths for various sized ships.

With over 300 Siwertell systems installed around the world, this award-winning technology is yet another Cargotec success story.

As a proud seller of Cargotec products, Atlas Polar would like to congratulate everyone at Cargotec for this outstanding achievement.

Multilift Hooklifts and HIAB Cranes Support Fire Fighters Around the Globe

Friday, November 27th, 2009

As we all know, fire fighters rely on specialized vehicles to get their jobs done. In addition to big pumpers and ladder trucks, each fire fighting team is supported by smaller vehicles that carry extra equipment or assist with salvage and overhaul. Until recently, they used vehicles with fixed bodies. These vehicles were proving to be highly inefficient – they had limited uses and also had to spend a lot of time in stand-by mode until the fire fighters completed their work.

Fire departments have recently discovered a better way to outfit their support vehicles: Multilift hooklifts and HIAB cranes. Here are a couple of examples of how fire fighters are using this tandem of equipment in their everyday work:

  • The Surrey Fire Department wanted a modular truck that could load or unload the necessary equipment at a site and, if required, head off to another site to assist. They chose a combination of Multilift hooklift and HIAB crane. In fact, they were the first in North America to use this type of multi-purpose vehicle.
  • The Dutch Fire Brigade and Highway Patrol had similar needs. They wanted a versatile vehicle that could provide tools, mobile water pumps, hose reels and water tanks. They chose a Multilift hooklift (with innovative automated PLC control) and the HIAB XS 111 crane.

Both fire departments recognized the distinct advantages of a combination HIAB truck boom and Multilift hooklift for assisting and supporting their important work. These new vehicles can carry a wide variety of equipment. They can quickly and easily unload at one site and then move onto the next site to provide support there. Clearly, these innovative load handling solutions have improved incident logistics for these fire departments.

Multilift and Hiab Cranes – Versatile Load Handling Solutions with International Appeal

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Long popular in Canada, the Multilift hooklift also has appeal in other parts of the world.

Here’s a case in point. Recently the Finnish Defence Forces placed orders for 78 Multilift hooklifts for on–road trucks. An additional order was placed for 21 hooklifts and 9 HIAB boom cranes for off-road vehicles.

The XR range of hooklifts chosen by the Finnish Defence Forces represents Multilift’s most advanced technology. These hooklifts include automatic sequence control to make loading and unloading easier. With a single control motion the operator can easily load or pick up the demountable body. Driver comfort, smooth and precise controls, and state–of–the–art safety systems are among the other exceptional features in this product line.

For their off-road vehicles, the Finnish Defence Forces selected the Multilift and the HIAB XS211 knuckleboom crane. This mid-capacity crane combines a light boom with high lifting capacity and a compact footprint, making it ideal for moving heavy loads in tight spaces.

Atlas Polar is proud to sell both of these innovative load handling solutions. To learn more, visit our HIAB Truck Crane page or Multilift Hooklift page.

Multilift Celebrates 60 Years

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

What do you do when you see inefficiencies in your materials handling systems? You find solutions.

In the late 1940s, Mikko, Mauni and Matti Terho of Raisio, Finland were working in the materials handling business, transporting lumber from an army surplus warehouse. Seeing how much time and effort was spent in loading and unloading, they decided to try and make improvements.

They developed a “mechanical cable–operated interchangeable platform loader” – soon to be known as demountable – that made use of the truck’s front winch. With their invention, called the Cablelift, it was possible to use a variety of platform bodies. The body was lowered to the ground, leaving the truck to perform other duties during loading and unloading.

With the addition of a hydraulic motor in 1956, the hydraulic demountable was born. Soon after, the Terho brothers sold their company and the new Multilift Group was founded. Since that time, the company has been acquired by Cargotec Corporation, owner of the HIAB line.

Atlas Polar congratulates the entire Multilift team on sixty years of success!

With its 60th anniversary, Cargotec has announced some changes to the Multilift hooklift line. The new 14 ton capacity XR14S will soon be added to the hooklift line and will gradually replace the LHS 190 for 2–3 axle 19–26 GVW trucks.
