Moffett truck-mounted forklifts have proven indispensible to fire and rescue services in the UK, where they have been used in accident clean-up and animal rescue. They were even specified as standard equipment for the decontamination units used for chemical incidents in Britain. More specifically, the Moffett M8 truck-mounted forklift has completed successful trials with the Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service in Scotland, and is now ready to be rolled out to fire departments across Europe.

The Moffett M8 has been customized for use with fire services. Older models of Moffett forklifts have been used for years by fire departments, mainly to transport foam and breathing apparatus. The new M8 model has many modifications that make it ideal for other tasks as well, as noted in the attached PDF.

“The new M8 offers a number of enhancements over the M7 model, which it replaces, one being increased operator space with easy reach controls – creating better access for firefighters carrying breathing apparatus. The prototype model being tested in Strathclyde is also fitted with extra hydraulics capable of powering concrete breakers. These are invaluable for dealing with major emergencies, such as when a structure collapses and people are trapped inside…The hydraulics can also power the concrete disc cutters used when the fire and rescue service is called out to assist with road traffic accidents.”

Can you imagine my surprise when surfing the Internet I came across a video showing a HIAB truck crane erecting the original Stonehenge, a Multilift hooklift delivering the famous Easter Island statues, and a Moffett forklift handling stone for the famous pyramids of Chichén-Itzá! Well, with a bit of historical fiction in play, Cargotec had some fun showing how their truck mounted products work today in all kinds of applications around the globe.

The video offers a fun way of looking at the many capabilities of HIAB load handling solutions. It describes how the HIAB XS crane concept allows customers to order “tailor-made cranes” that meet their specific requirements. It also notes the wide selection of lifting capacities, from 1 to 90 tm, and outreach of between 2 and 30m. When discussing the Multilift hooklift system, the video points out that Multilift is the global leader in demountables because of the excellent reliability and productivity of the equipment. Of Moffett truck mounted forklifts, the video states that they “revolutionized the way materials are distributed,” and also notes that they are the best selling truck mounted forklift in the world.

HIAB Québec recently exhibited at the BMR Buying Show in Place Forzani, Laval, Quebec on March 24 and 25th. They were invited as a select BMR supplier and brought with them displays and equipment like HIAB truck cranes and Moffett forklifts installed on customer trucks.

BMR started as a group of six lumber and building materials dealers. They decided to get together to pool purchases and increase buying volumes to pass on savings to their members. The group eventually expanded into hardware distribution. BMR now has more than 183 dealers/members operating renovation centres across eastern Canada. As BMR’s website notes, in 2006, “the commercial flow generated by BMR dealers exceeded the billion dollar mark.”

It is a few years old now, but this clip from the National Ploughing Championship in Grangeford, Tulow County, Ireland showcases the rough terrain capabilities of the Moffett M8 truck mounted forklift.

Clearly, this is a very experienced operator, but he shows the strength, stability, and manoeuvrability of the Moffett forklift as he successfully pulls the machine out of the muck. He begins with an empty forklift, but by about the halfway point of the video, he has added cargo to the forks. Even with the added weight, the forklift still does not falter in the very demanding conditions it is working in. It is amazing to watch.

Moffett M5 truck mounted forklifts have been selected by the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to be part of their new, highly specialized bulk foam unit appliances.

Although their older bulk foam units served them well, the LFB decided to acquire new equipment to deal with large-scale emergencies, like aircraft crashes, chemical spills, or fires on large industrial sites, where large amounts of foam must be applied to bring the incident under control. According to Jim Knighton, London Fire Brigade’s Assistant Commissioner for Operational Policy, “…we need new technology to meet modern challenges. The new machines work in tandem with our pumping appliances to provide many thousands more litres of foam than was possible before.”

The new bulk foam unit is based on a 26-tonne Mercedes Actros chassis and includes a rear-mounted Moffett M5 40.3 forklift for loading and unloading the foam concentrate. The attached pictures show the entire unit and the Moffett forklift on the back.

There will also be an M5 40.4 forklift going into service with the London Fire Brigade. This 4-way will be used to carry specialist equipment and material, including semi-inflatable boats enclosed in special stillages, direct to the water’s edge when required. The 4-way will enable the equipment to be delivered through narrow access points.

The M5 40.3/40.4 model has a lift height of 2.2 metres, 29” tractor grip tires with “Tyre Tyte”, a ground mount, 4-way lighting, and 2 flashing beacons.
