Ever Wondered What HIAB Stands For?

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The name HIAB is synonymous with quality and innovation in materials handling solutions. From truck mounted loader cranes to Multilift hooklifts and Moffett piggyback truck mounted forklifts, HIAB covers all the bases when it comes to load handling.

But what does HIAB, the name, actually stand for?

The company was founded in Sweden in 1944. Its full name is Hydraliska Industri AB, which was shortened to HIAB.

The founder was Eric Sundin who had developed a way to use hydraulics to power loader cranes. Around the same time, three Finnish brothers developed the first hooklift. They launched the Multilift company in 1949. The two companies would later find themselves merged together when the Partek Corporation purchased Multilift (in 1977) and then HIAB (in 1985).

More mergers have occurred since then, and HIAB and Multilift have continued to thrive under their various owners: first the KONE Corporation, which acquired Partek in 2002, and then Cargotec, which acquired the brands in 2005.

Since 1953, Atlas Polar has worked as distributor of HIAB products—truck mounted cranes first, followed by the other HIAB products. In fact, Atlas Polar is HIAB’s oldest independent dealer in the world. To see the full range, visit our home page and then select the product category you want to learn about: HIAB truck crane, Moffett forklift, or Multilift hooklift.

Lightest and Shortest Moffett Yet

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Got a heavy load to move in a small space? The Moffett M2 15.1 is the forklift for you.

Among Moffett truck mounted forklifts, the M2 15.1 is light, narrow, and easy to move but still offers the most power within its load capacity class—it handles loads up to 1,500 kg. With less overhang than other Moffett forklift models, the M2 is ideal for small trucks.

In addition to manoeuvrability, the M2 offers greatly improved ergonomics. The driver compartment is spacious and comfortable with a large steering wheel that means less turning of the wheel and better visibility.

The attached article from HIAB Method magazine gives you all the details about the new M2 15.1, including the new technologies included in its design.

Atlas Polar is pleased to carry a wide selection of Moffett piggyback truck mounted forklifts suited to many different applications—building supply, turf, food and beverage, utilities, general cartage and more.

Our Moffett truck mounted forklift pages tell you all you need to know about these versatile and powerful machines. Download a product brochure, read specs, or watch a video. If you have any further questions, please contact your local sales dealer.

Wingliner First With Moffett in North America

Monday, May 10th, 2010

Rona is the first company in North America to take delivery of a new Wingliner truck.

Wingliner, based in Austria, is the manufacturer of a revolutionary new delivery truck door system. Using hydraulic swiveling side doors, the Wingliner offers many advantages for goods delivery. Because it opens in only ten seconds with the push of a button, it saves time and increases delivery speeds. Seals all around the door protect loads. It has a very low loading height. With such a wide door, loading and unloading is smoother, even with long or bulky items.

Loading and unloading is made even easier with a Moffett piggyback forklift. The Moffett M5 50.4 truck mounted forklift, shown on the back of the Wingliner truck in the video below, is an ideal partner for the Wingliner. Mounting on the back of the truck, it fits neatly behind the load. There is no need for a second operator: at the delivery site, the driver can easily complete the delivery of goods using the Moffett forklift.

The Moffett takes only 30 seconds to mount or demount, making it possible to arrive at a destination and start unloading in less than a minute.

The Moffett M5 50.4 truck mounted forklift offers 4-way multi-directional handling and all-wheel drive, making it highly maneuverable, even in tight spots. With a capacity of 5,000 pounds at 24” load centres, the M5 50.4 is powerful as well as versatile.

No matter what kind of goods you are delivering, there is a Moffett piggyback forklift to suit your needs. Visit our Moffett Truck Mounted Forklifts page for more information.

Kubota Engines and Moffett Forklifts – A Winning Team

Sunday, January 10th, 2010

The Kubota engine is recognized as the premier industrial engine in Canada and has been used to power Moffett forklifts for close to a decade. The latest Kubota 03-M Series engines are found in the Moffett M8 series of truck mounted forklifts, including the popular M8 50.3, M8 55.3PL (Pantograph and Lift Assist), and multi-directional models.

Here are some of the reasons Kubota engines are so well respected:

  • They comply with the most stringent regulations for emissions, including the EPA Interim Tier 4 regulations, effective until 2012, and the EU Stage III A requirements, effective to 2012 and beyond.
  • These engines are known for their durability in all kinds of industrial applications, their excellent performance and versatility.
  • Kubota’s original casting technology acts as a countermeasure against heat load of high power density, making the engines more reliable and durable.
  • Kubota engines are clean and quiet. The E-TVCS system has been improved to reduce particulate matter by 50%, while other improvements have lowered noise levels by 1.0-2.0 dBA over conventional diesel engines.
  • With side power take-off (PTO), a hydraulic pump can be installed at two side PTO locations.

When you combine a Kubota engine with the superior quality of a Moffett forklift, you get an industry leading solution for materials handling.

Fairgreen Sod Farms and Moffett Forklifts, A Great Team

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

Atlas Polar is proud to do business with Fairgreen Sod Farms, a family–run company that strives not to be the biggest sod grower in Ontario, but simply one of the best.

How times have changed since the company started. Fairgreen began with one farm in the Markham area, but now grows sod on over 1,600 acres across 18 different farms. In the early days of the business, the act of harvesting sod was very labour–intensive. Because it was hand–cut and rolled onto trucks, a crew was able to harvest only about 3,500 rolls of sod per day, if conditions were good. Now, with mechanized harvesters, Fairgreen can harvest over 35,000 rolls of sod per day.

The company does more than just grow sod, of course. It offers everything needed for lawn care, including seed, top soil, triple mix, fertilizer, and their own garden blend of peat, manure, compost and mineral soil.

Fairgreen delivers its products across much of the GTA. As they note on their Website, their trucks “are equipped with turf tire forklifts which enable them to travel across lawns and driveways” so that bags of soil can be placed exactly where they are needed.

The forklifts they use are Moffett forklifts, available from Atlas Polar. Moffett forklifts are versatile and durable. They also have the highest resale value in the industry.

Fairgreen has discovered the flexibility and excellent performance in Moffett forklifts. To learn more yourself, visit our Moffett Truck Mounted Forklift page. To find out more about Fairgreen, or to read their very helpful lawn care tips, visit them at www.fairgreensod.com.

Introduction to Moffett

The Atlas Polar website is full of interesting and informative items. We are constantly updating our site with new info and videos so that we can remain a resource for our customers and friends. One of the videos that we have just uploaded to our website is a short but valuable operator training intro clip for Moffett Truck Mounted Forklifts.

If you recently purchased a Moffett Truck Mounted Forklift, or would just like a quick refresher, take a few moments to check out this video.

I know that, for a lot of people, there is a tendency to skip over the introduction in a manual or the first couple of paragraphs in an instruction list. When it comes to heavy equipment, though, this is not always the best idea. In this intro video, a few key facts about the Moffett Truck Mounted Forklift are pointed out that bring home the importance of reading the manual and understanding safety features. As an example, if you have operated one model of this machine, it does not necessarily mean that you will be able to operate every model in the exact same manner. Features and functionality may vary between models.

The video can’t be more than two minutes long, so please take a look and feel free to comment about it on this blog.

How to choose the right truck mounted forklift

A forklift is a very significant investment for any company. And, although one particular model of truck mounted forklift can perform a lot of different tasks, there is no one-choice-fits-all solution. Choosing the right piggyback forklift will help you get the right jobs, and then get those jobs done properly, efficiently, and safely. Choosing the wrong forklift can be detrimental to your operations, your operators, and your bottom line. Before choosing your next truck mounted forklift, there are some important questions that you need to ask yourself.

Here is just a sample of the type of questions you should answer before choosing your forklift:

  1. What type, weight, and dimensions of products will I be delivering?
There are various attachments, accessories, lifting capacities and grip / manoeuvrability options associated with different forklift models and styles.
  2. What lift height will be required for my deliveries?
Standard, extended, and collapsed mast options are available for different height requirements.
  3. How do I plan to mount the forklift to the truck, and in what season will I utilize my forklift?
Modifications may need to be made based on model and season.
  4. What is the model’s performance history, typical resale value, and what sales support offerings?

If the particular model you are looking at has a good performance history, especially for your area, a good resale value, and comes with excellent support, this means you are on the right track to finding equipment that is right for you.

For detailed information about choosing the right model of forklift for your operations, take a look at this PDF, entitled How To Choose The Right Truck Mounted Forklift.
